Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by yorkb 12 comments

KDE's aim is to be an easy to use desktop for the KDE/Linux beginner. 90% of KDE/Linux Beginners formerly used MS Windows. Therefore the initial default settings of the desktop should be MS-Windows-like. Wheater we like it or not, but this is a fact. To convince beginners to use KDE it first must provide a familiar working environment.

However you're example could be part of a default set up for people coming from OS X to the KDE world. - Jul 29 2004

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by Yaba 12 comments

I guess you are refering to the instructions in the INSTALL file.

WRT step 3 (dynice installation):

You just have to copy the script, not the entire directory. So first change the current directory into the extracted tarball (see Step 1).

WRT step 1 (Patch installation):

The path ~/tmp/kde3.2.2/kdebase-3.2.2 is just an example where the sources are located on my system (this is also described in this step as example). See my reply to the posting above. Get the KDE sources, extract them and adjust the PATH to match your environment.

If you don't want to compile KDE it's still sufficient to just run the dynice script with either the -u or the -t option. - Jul 16 2004

There is only one thing, that sticks me to kopete: Metacontacts.

If one contact has multiple accounts, these can be moved into one meta account. The IM then automatically selects the protocol that is currently available. If more than on protocol for a contact is available it chooses the one, that has given a higher priority in the settings. - Jul 06 2004

HDE

Various Stuff by haydar 9 comments

So HDE has absolutely nothing to do with KDE.

Regarding your points:

GTK Themes: Have a look in the GTK section. There you mostly find GTK themes that match KDE themes. However this section is mainly here, because KDE 2.x was able to use GTK themes directly.

IceWM: KWin can use IceWM themes for the window decoration.

X11 Mouse Cursors: OK, this is not directly related to KDE, but still much more than HDE, since Mouse Cursors are also used under KDE and therefore benefits from it.

Maybe I just don't get it? How do KDE Users benefit from HDE?

According to your argumentation everybody could also post Gnome stuff in the 'other' section. However the 'other' section is not a container for everything else in the world. It's a container for KDE stuff that does not fit in the other sections. - Jun 09 2004

To all others... this applies to the install script of the themes, which is not included in this package.

To Nightwriter... Thank you very much. Finally someone found a bug and I already feared that no one is using it. Indeed, you've found a problem. I have taken a look on your diff, but decided to implement it differently. The copy command cold also have different sources for failure. Therefore the new install script checks for the existence of the directory explicitely and then asks the user, if he wants to create it.

Again, thank you very much for your effort and telling me.

I'll update the themes 'axios' and 'iPod' with the new install script in a couple of minutes. - May 23 2004
