Description: I think this would be the next logical step for backgrounds. You get informations and the space isn't unused. Maybe someone could code a php-script. Konqueror should also support html-pages as background. Further the question "dou you realy want to execute ..." should be turned off by option, so we can start programms using hyperlinks. What do you think about that idea?

Now the atached file is an archive containing a php-Script and the images, but no functionality except a few links. Maybe someone want to continue my work, you has some knowledge in php, because I think it is not easy to ask a mail-server wether there are new emails.
PS: Why does KDE-Lokk.org does not accept tar.bz2 files?
Active Desktop is more usefull on Linux than on Windows, because on nearly every
Linux-machine there is the Apache-webserver installed, so everyone can have his
personal startpage with news, ebay offers, email, icq, embedded google search,
forum notifications, wallstreet news and so on.
I think, the desktop in KDE is also drawn by Konqueor. It's an extended fileview. Why not just put a khtml-view there?
Is it posible to use the desktop as a webbrowser... the program kwebdesktop only convert a webpage to an image and thats not so good if you want any input from the user...
Ok you can write scripts that display news tv times and alot of other stuff but if you want to open programs it won't work...

In my opinion, the only thing that prevent KDE adopt such an "active" desktop it'sthe mentality of it's users. Even if we like it or not, KDE copy windoze model in most of it's part (from usage point of view).
But it would be nice to see an active desktop like OEONE's one in KDE, tough.
It's just a quickhack. I had the idea yesterday evening and started coding a html-page. It isn't very nice yet, because i'm not an artist. That's why I asked, if someone more talented would continue. It's viewed in Konqueror, because my version of KDE 2.2.2 does not support html-pages as background. I think, it isn't so different from windows: Windows has Active Desktop to solve such problems and WinCE has already a "today-Page" (I've seen on some screenshots from CE-Smartphones). I wanted to have such a feature on my Linux KDE. Does Konqueror support HTML-Pages as background in KDE 3.0?
I think that this is a very good idea, and is very worth working on. It will give the niveau userfriendly a big kick. Furthermore, it gives KDE what many people talks about, something (more) that windows doesen't have... And this is, in my opinion, a very important thing to make people switch to linux!
I voted because i like the idea, and i feel that there should be such great innovations in KDE.
The reason i mentioned the 'but' is because this is no where near perfect. I can't see how this is considered a wallpaper when you're actually displaying it in konqueror. Also, the "wallpaper" is just too simple in my opinion, it should be more complex, more attractive and perhaps more well organized.

yes, but I think it's too commercial. We need a solution that works good together with KDE and that is simple and easy to use.
