aKode
Source (link to git-repo or to original if based on someone elses unmodified work):
aKode is the decoding library used in akode_artsplugin in kdemultimedia, and improves the aRts experience by fewer drop-outs, more supported formats and fewer bugs in general.
It can also be used directly without aRts in JuK and Amarok.
aKode supports decoding of MPEG audio, Ogg Vorbis, Ogg FLAC, old FLAC, Speex, WAV, and Musepack audio.
The aKode 2.0 release is independent from kdemultimedia and now features stable aRts-less playback.

I've just updated the Ark Linux packages to 2.0.1 -- Ark Linux users simply apt-get update; apt-get install akode. Others in need of RPMs may try their luck with http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/SRPMS/akode-2.0.1-1ark.src.rpm http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/i586/akode-2.0.1-1ark.i586.rpm

Hi, I have a problem compiling Akode 2.0 rc1 with gcc-3.4.4. When using 3.4.3 it does work fine. I use gentoo Linux. Where may I post such issues?
I have to set the sound-quality (16bit) and sampling rate manually, as otherise the sound is very noisy. Where can I set these parameters?
If you use ALSA you change the ALSA defaults in .asoundrc

A small correction: aKode cannot be used directly by amaroK.
