Hey, what's about this project? knowit is the best programm I know to simply save Ideas, Concepts or any other things in one place. Good to manage entries, add links or attachments etc... But finally I miss some features like quicknotes, encryption, xml, attachments (not only links to local files), maybe an integration in other applications and so on... Is this project still in development? Regards

mrudolf

It is not that bad. Some progress was made, a lot more is planned. You can grab current CVS at http://knowit.sf.net All depends on my free time and as I have some other Open Sources projects, it slows down things.

This is the most frequently used app on my computer and I couldn't work without it.

That worked great! I did not get any errors during the make install, should I have? Great program, this is exactly what I was looking for. SCuM

This program looks like it will be great but after compiling and installing I get it to come up but then it immediately gives me this error: Cannot open resource file knowitui.rc. Some of the menus and toolbars will be missing.Probably Knowit was not installed properly. If you installed from source, please invoke make install. If you use precompiled package, please contact packager. So I tried again but still no go. What did I screw up. Thanks in advnace. SCuM

SCuM

The file it claims is missing is in the /usr/local/kde/share/apps/knowit directory. So not sure what to do. SCuM

It looks like program hasn't been installed successfully. Invoke make install after compilation. Or, if you cannot install it, copy knowituirc to $HOME/.kde/apps/knowit

Good - light weight notes app.

It is a neat tool: However, I realy miss two features: * to assign symbols for the folder/categories (somehow as it is possible in tuxcards to assign a user-defined icons to each folder) * a proper xml export (which enables one to to xslt and sovles the problem of interaction with mindmaps tools, i.e. freemind) best, glove

what is the point in duplicating kjots? IMHO it would have been better to enhance kjots, but now it looks like knowit has more features? Maybe KDE could replace kjots with knowit for KDE 3.3?

mrudolf

I started KnowIt because KJots was not enough for me. It was easier to start new application than to provide some patches to KDE-core application which was maintained by someone else.

It would be nice if text nodes can be stored in KOffice format. That way you could get the whole power of KOffice in terms of formating (I am missing enumerations - even though they can be seen on the screenshot) and you could even include formulas. Support for these items would make knowit a perfect tool for research for my Bachelor's thesis.

mrudolf

Well, that would require adding KOffice dependency and many people don't have KOffice installed although they use KDE. So, I'd prefer to add more format/export support without using KOffice library.

Hi Michal, nice to see Knowit here :-) BTW, Hapy new year! Thilo

It's a wonderful tiny tool. Just a few ideas for enhancement: - can the KDE groupware server be used for multiuser-functionality? - kind of IM integration, blackboard for many users - web interface/publish as web site - export as kword - "mind map" style export (they are usually hierarchical too, but editing them 2d usually is no fun, however generating mind map from a hierarchy

TRoessler

Maybe we can share some more ideas here :-) Concerning Mind-Mapping, I don't know if you are aware of KDissert (based on Umbrello). Thilo

mrudolf

Could you please e-mail me more details? You may also consider posting ideas on knowit-devel@lists.sourceforge.net.

Very nice tool. Hopefully I'm not entirely off topic. I would also like to see a KDE/Linux mindmapping (mm) tool. I have never programmed anything for KDE/Linux yet (busy studying, etc.), but would really like to help. Some time ago, I also considered using Umbrelllo, but my favorite Linux mm tool is Freemind (http://freemind.sourceforge.net) at the moment. There aren't that many alternatives, actually. IMHO, Mindjet's Mindmapper (http://www.mindjet.com), a Windows application, is the most advanced and comfortable mm tool, and could be a nice 'role model' for developing a KDE mm-tool, using Umbrello for instance. Mindmapper contains the features proposed by elektroshock and: - can be used with a (Palm-)PDA - complies with the mm guidelines presented by Tony Buzan (http://www.mind-mapping.co.uk/make-mind-map.htm) - uses colours and graphics - a lot more to consider... Such an app would certainly be a great addition to my current kile/kword-bookcase-configuration for studying and writing reports and articles.
