Sall ppls! did anybody manage to install it on XandrOS 2-3 Deluxe?
I've successfully compiled the source for the Mandrake Galaxy theme on Slackware Linux 9.0. There was nothing special about the compilation. I just grabbed the source for it from... ftp://mirrors.secsup.org/pub/linux/mandrake/Mandrake/9.2/SRPMS/galaxy-0.9.4-14mdk.src.rpm and extracted/installed it using KPackage, without the Check Dependencies option on. It installed the sources to /usr/src/rpm/SOURCES/, then I ran... tar -xjf galaxy-0.9.4.tar.bz2 and ran the ./configure script, did a 'make', then 'make install', while in a root console. After installing I logged out of X/KDE and logged back in, and went into the Appearances area, and selected it as my theme for everything and voila, it worked! I think those users using older versions of Slack or other distro's may just need to update the components that the theme needs/uses to compile it. I imagine that users with Slackware 9.1 or fairly new versions of their distro will also be able to compile this theme in the same fashion. Hope this helps some of you folks out there.
It would be nice to have everything matching, one whole theme
Galaxy is a very nicely done theme. However I find it impossible to use in practice. It's extremely low contrast, with no hard edges and light shadows everywhere. Everything is a very similar shade of powder grey. I often lose the scrollbar slider if I don't look really closely. Buttons are very hard to make out against there background. While it's artistically very nice, it's really hard on the eyes in practice.
I downloaded: ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake/9.1/SRPMS/galaxy-0.2-18mdk.src.rpm After using rpm2tgz on it, I unpacked it and it contained: ./galaxy.spec ./galaxy-0.2.tar.bz2 ./thememdk.tar.bz2 galaxy-0.2.tar.bz2 appears to be the GTK end of things thememdk.tar.bz2 appears to be the KDE end of things
For those who use Gentoo or might want some tips on building this: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=37446 (Gentoo forums thread about a mandrake-artwork ebuild). HTH, -Tom
If you do "rpm -i source.src.rpm" it will unpack it to /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES. you may have to create /usr/src/redhat before doing this, but then you will have the source tar.bz2 files. I had problems compiling, and only got the style to compile and install. I can't get the window border working.
What exactly is the SRPM called? galaxy-0.2-18mdk.src.rpm appears to be GTK2 only and I cant find anything else.
That didn't work either on Slackware. Has anyone had any success with either?
Anybody can compile the SRPM for SuSE 8.0? The package shows that it needs automake-1.4 and aclocal-1.4. And SuSE uses 1.5. Thanks.
Where is the FTP of mandrake? ftp.mandrake.com doesnt work, and none of the download mirrors have sourcecode? Could you provide a link? Thanks!
try ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/mandrake/9.1/SRPMS/ i can only find the source rpm, i alien'd it then unpacked it with dpkg-deb. Is there an easier way to unpack the src.rpm ?? and no doing an alien on the binary rpm and using it doesnt work either.

well I know if you are on Redhat and you just install a src RPM with "rpm -Uvh " instead of building it, it will just put the source code into the directory "/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/" I would assume you get a similar effect on other distros. Try that if you just want the source.
This will be no use unless you have Alien. I dont know if its part of slackware or not, but this sure is useful for Debian users. ftp://ftp.phys.ttu.edu/pub/mandrake/current/SRPMS/galaxy-0.2-18mdk.src.rpm I searched all over and couldnt find plain gz/bz source anywhere. You may want to try a different mirror from the list at http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/ftp.php3#mirrors
Oops Ignore that one. Its a GTK2 version! I unpacked it after posting :\ Oh well its there for those who want it aswell :)
the download mirrors do have the source. you just have to go one directory up to find them.
But I can't handle SRPMS. If you go to the URL above (to the source RPM) and go one up, there are no .tar.gz files anywhere to be found. Could you link directly to one?
You will have to get some RPM -> Tarball program (try alien or rpm2tgz).
so do you know where to get the source tarball from? i can't (and wouldn't) use rpm's cause i use a self-made-dist compiled from scratch and don't want rpm to mess around with my system! is ist real GPL? if so, the tarball has to be somewhere ready to get!
The source is avalaible on the ftp of Mandrake, in the source directories.
ive yet to make it compile under debian though, doesnt help when it links against mandrake stuff which we cant get. its all well and good to have mandrake looking brilliant but i dont like rpm based distros, why cant we just get a tar.gz or something which will compile for the rest of us. the gtk 1/2 + metacity stuff compiles however the kde side just has errors.
Its a Mandrake RPM, what do you expect? They have customized it (and rightly so) for Mandrake. To make it work with Debian, you wil have to do some work.
I spoke too soon, apologies.
Do you have the source?
