I really don't know why you have to double click on it because I just have to make a single click.
If you have to double click on files in konqueror or the desktop too? Than you have to chang your KDE settings.
Please don't ask me where, because I can't remember but I know that I have seen it somewhere long time ago. But I do know that you can switch "single click or doublecklick to open file" or something like that.

I know if you don't have the theme in a locked position then you will have to double-click on the controls. Try making sure it's position is locked via the right click menu.
