Its very 3-dimensional. And you used the Gimp brushes really effectively. There are lots of ideas here that (apologies) I think I'm gonna copy...at least I'll try to.
Did you make any custom brushes? I mean, several of the swirls have glare effects extending far beyond the swirl that make each swirl just iridesce.
It reminds me of "hot ice and wondrous strange snow..." from A Midsummer Night's Dream.
