Description:

undvd is dvd ripping made *simple* with an easy interface to mencoder with sensible default settings that give good results. For those times you just want to rip a movie and not consider thousands of variables.

A longer description:
http://www.matusiak.eu/numerodix/blog/?s=undvd

All releases and distro packages:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/undvd/

Changelog:

0.7.5:
* Fix: Ignore invalid dvd device when ripping from iso or directory.

0.7.4:
* Fix: Audio and subtitle settings missing.

0.7.3:
* Fix: Divide by zero bug.
* Fix: File size estimate.
* Fix: File not found on dvd scan with vidstat.

0.7.2:
* Reclassify lsdvd as soft dependency, can now use scandvd without it.
* vidstat: compute bitrate if possible.
* Fix outpug bug on cygwin.

0.7.1:
* Posix compatibility. Tested on FreeBSD, Solaris, OS X, Cygwin.

0.7.0:
* Port to perl. Speed boost all around, especially in scandvd.
* Internalize all unncessary external calls, remove unneeded dependencies.
* Add time estimate on crop detection.
* Omit disc cloning by default.
* Fix: Output the right file extension in dry run mode.
* Fix: Correct subtitle id numbers.

0.6.1:
* Validate user input.
* New --bpp option.
* Setting x:y scaling now allows breaking the original aspect ratio.
* Add more exotic codecs.
* Add full codectest report with all codecs and containers.

0.6.0:
* New encvid tool for general purpose encoding/conversion.
* Add --version and --adv options.

0.5.2:
* New codectest tool.
* Add --start and --version options.
* Add more codecs and containers.

0.5.1:
* Add support for ogm container and more containers and codecs based on lavc.
* Fix parsing bugs on filenames with quotes, slashes and other special
characters.

0.5.0:
* Support for selecting container format and audio/video codecs.
* Add audio codec and bitrate detection in vidstat.

0.4.4:
* Add support for printing and selecting audio and subtitle numeric ids.
* Add long options to clarify usage.
* Check that $TERM is sent before outputting shell escapes.

0.4.3:
* Make subtitle selection optional (off by default).
* Fix unpredictable behavior when both -n and -i or -q are set.
* Fix cryptic bug when dvd device is set incorrectly.
* Fix bug that occurs when crop detection fails. New behavior is to halt.

0.4.2:
* New switch -c enables autocropping.
* Get rid of .sh suffix for executable scripts.
* Fix long suspected misbehavior due to non deterministic option parsing.
* Add packaging option: publish to ubuntu ppa.

0.4.1:
* Smarter scaling based on a sensible constant for the number of pixels in a
frame of video instead of constant scaling along the width.
* Scaling enforces a target framesize of an even number of 16x16 pixel blocks.
* Make vidstat more resistant to bad input from video files and omit output of
unknown values.

0.4.0:
* Bitrate is now set dynamically based on bpp.
* New dry-run option -D for undvd to examine encoding parameters.
* New tool vidstat to examine video files or dvds.

0.3.3:
* Add option for disabling picture scaling, also clarify this in the userguide.
* undvd no longer needs to write temporary files to /tmp.

0.3.2:
* Fix problem with color output on black-on-white terminals.
* Clarify usage for scandvd.
* Use flag check in ebuild would halt emerge prematurely, fixed.

0.3.1:
* Adding support for vobcopy to clone encrypted dvds. undvd.sh now accepts
the -u flag to clone a dvd to disk that otherwise doesn't let itself be copied.

0.3.0:
* User set bitrate. Bitrate can now be set implicitly by setting an output
filesize for the video with the -o switch.
* 2-pass encoding. 2-pass encoding is done automatically if the bitrate is set
below the default. But 1-pass or 2-pass encoding can always be overriden by
using -1 and -2.
* New option to prevent disc cloning before encoding. The -n switch can now
be used to skip copying the dvd to the harddrive first, before encoding begins.
Useful when low on disk space.
* New system sanity check. undvd can now check for all programs it needs by
supplying the -c switch. It also checks for codec support.

0.2.2:
* New install script. While there was no official way of "installing" undvd
there is now a makefile with an "install" target, therefore "make install"
will deploy the files into the filesystem.
* Distribution specific packages:
+ gentoo ebuild
+ ubuntu .deb
+ fedora .rpm
These are all brand new and not well tested.

0.2.1:
Fixed a bug related to the -i switch in undvd. Also added the -i switch in
scandvd, so they now have the same options for source selection.

0.2.0:
Clarified some of the command line options a bit, added elapsed time. Also
added a note about the xine playback bug in the user guide.

 better quality?

 by dgvirtual on: Aug 30 2007

Score 50%

Nice simple app. However, what do I have to modify in the script to get better quality? For example, a bigger resolution?

This kind of thing could be explained in the attached help file. Or some option could be added, saying quality=high (while without that option it would have default average quality)

Well, my intention was to reduce the number of options to make it as simple as possible. The image is scaled to 2/3 of the original size and I believe this was to give the kind of target filesize that you get from undvd.

The premise is that the user doesn't care about this, because when you watch the video you can run it fullscreen, meanwhile the filesize is "a sensible default". But obviously, people differ on this.

You could easily change this in the script though, just comment out the ${scale} variable when mencoder is called.

I think you could, without compromising the simplicity of the program, introduce a feature to change default bitrate and dimensions of the video. If the user specified nothing, the sensible defaults could be used.

The options that the program spits out if run with no arguments, could be separated into necessary options and supplementary options.

What do you think?

I suppose you're right about that, but the main reason I' m skeptical is that it in its current state the video output (at least with data I've tried) is quite well tested and consistent in terms of quality. At least I get the kind of quality that I consider high.

Whereas introducing an option to fiddle with these settings would be to give free reigns to the user and let him fend for himself. Which is not what undvd is meant to do, it *is* meant to be somewhat restrictive. It goes against the core idea of undvd, to be as simple as possible.

 x264 and xine prob

 by dgvirtual on: Aug 31 2007

Score 50%

when ripping with x264 codec, mplayer based players display the picture all right, but xine based players (and vlc as well) show a lot of green areas throughout the movie.

I am using Kubuntu Feisty with mencoder 2:1.0~rc1-0ubuntu9.1 package.

If this a problem with the codec and is not version specific, maybe xvid should be used as default?

I hadn't noticed this. It may be a problem with the codec yes, but I have seen these symptoms lots of times with other videos and never really known the reason. Also, mplayer usually seems a bit more clever on codecs than xine.

But if this is a consistent thing that's rather worrying.

I tried just now and indeed xine does have those green patches you mentioned. vlc does not from what I see.

vlc 0.8.6.release-0ubuntu4
totem 2.18.1-0ubuntu3
mplayer 1.0~rc1-0ubuntu9.1

Yes, I was wrong about vlc. But xine gets all the rips wrong with those green lights.

And thank you for the suggestion regarding video size change.

 Rip from ISO

 by loofi on: Nov 16 2007

Great script! I used the previous version a lot.

But after upgrading to version 0.2.0 I am unable to rip from ISO. Using the -i parameter does not work. And of course i deleted the previous version.

Can you check if this feature is working as expected or provide me with a link to the previous version?

Thank you for reporting the problem!!

The silly bug had crept in and untested by me since the last time I tried to rip from an iso myself. I think it should work now.

Just started to try it, the options are nice and simple. I'll have to tell my final verdict on the quality of the rip though :P

 ddrescue

 by dgvirtual on: Jun 17 2009

In cases of encrypted AND copy-protected DVD's a tool called ddrescue can be very useful: I did a backup of encrypted dvd using it when the regular dd command (used in undvd) failed. I am currently ripping the resulting disc.iso file using undvd, while using undvd on the DVD disc itself failed within seconds (both using the --clone option and without it).

Nice little helper, reminds me on abcde, just for DVDs.

The only thing that's bugging me: undvd lacks a config file. Would be great to have one to adjust the favorite audio and video codec, favorite container and encoding options. So I had to change $local_opt in common.pm to get the high-quality encoding options suggested by the mplayer-team (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/menc-feat-x264.html), which always gave me good results.

Nevertheless, I really appreciate undvd. Thank you for sharing these great scripts!

Sign the config-file idea.
Would be great
